Continue reading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The growing concern of sustainability in food production<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food production<\/strong> consumes significant amounts of water and energy, emits polluting gases into water, air and soil, and is currently <strong>responsible for 11.3%<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 of greenhouse gas emissions within the European Union<sup>1<\/sup><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As consumers become more aware of the challenges facing the food system around them, more of them are paying attention to how food is processed, where it comes from and what effects it has on their health and that of the planet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Perception regarding more sustainable food in Europe<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to a recent survey by <strong>BEUC-The European Consumer Organization<\/strong>, entitled &#8216;<strong>One bite at a time: consumers and the transition to sustainable food<\/strong>&#8216;, these are some of the findings that exemplify the change in Europe:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most consumers say they pay some attention (47%) or a lot of attention (17%) to the environmental impact of their food choices.<\/li>\n<li>Countries and markets such as Italy, Spain, Portugal or Greece are more sensitive to this. In contrast, countries such as Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands are less demanding in this regard.<\/li>\n<li>According to the latest Eurobarometer on Europeans and the environment, 20% of respondents reported having changed their diet to incorporate more sustainable foods.<\/li>\n<li>Consumers associate \u00absustainable food\u00bb with \u00ablow environmental impact\u00bb (48.6%), \u00abavoidance of GMOs and pesticides\u00bb (42.6%) and \u00ablocal supply chains\u00bb (34.4%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, since the <strong>outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic<\/strong>, there has been an accelerated <strong>change in the perception of sustainability in the food industry<\/strong>, which also associates product origin with food safety.
