The <\/span>Agrupaci\u00f3n de Exportadores de Almendra y Avellana de Espa\u00f1a<\/span><\/i> (<\/b>Spanish Almond Board,<\/span> SAB-Almendrave<\/b><\/a>) <\/span>held the <\/span>sixth almond and hazelnut gathering<\/b>, entitled this year round <\/span>\u201cCrops, sustainability and health: Almond and hazelnut sector commitments\u201d \u2013 <\/b>a virtual event that saw the participation of <\/span>Importaco Group, <\/b>which contributed its experience in the field of <\/span>sustainable transformation of <\/b>almond<\/b><\/a> and <\/b>hazelnut<\/b><\/a> crops.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This event saw the participation of national and international experts who <\/span>analysed the new developments and forecasts related to the cultivation of these crops<\/b> around the world, with a focus on sustainability, environmental policies and the <\/span>health<\/b> benefits of almonds and hazelnuts.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the opening speech, the president of SAB-Almendrave, Pere Ferr\u00e9, highlighted that the cultivation of almond trees has grown by 36% in the last six years, for a total of 718,540 hectares.<\/span> \u201cWhat is more important is that most of the new plantations are on irrigable land, reaching 118,000 hectares from the previous 46,000<\/b>\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Later, several international experts discussed the outlook for the new crops. Richard Waycott, president and CEO of the Almond Board of California, stated that they are experiencing a drought that \u201cwill undoubtedly affect production costs in our valley, since more money must be paid for the use of the water\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And in this regard, Ross Skinner, CEO of the <\/span>Almond Board of Australia,<\/b> estimated that <\/span>this year they will reach 58,000 crop hectares and 123,000 tons of almonds, expecting their production potential to reach 180,000 tons by 2025.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the other hand, the <\/span>production potential of Spain is expected to amount to 180,000 tons by 2024.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sustainability, environment and health<\/b><\/h2>\n

The next block focused on <\/span>sustainability, environment and health<\/b>. Gaspar Alapont, Importaco Group\u2019s director of almond purchases in Spain, gave the opening talk titled \u201cAlmond and hazelnut: sustainable, eco-friendly crops that are highly beneficial to people\u2019s health\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During his talk, he explained that the priority for all stakeholders in the value chain is \u201cto be compliant with today\u2019s environmental policies from the field, through industries, to the customers \u2013 especially the end consumer\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe consumer is asking that we have more social responsibility in relation to the environment\u201d, Gaspar claimed.<\/b><\/p>\n

Global certifications and standards at every link in the chain<\/b><\/h3>\n

Gaspar Alapont insisted on \u201cstressing the importance of maintaining global standards that facilitate transactions with stakeholders from different countries\u201d. The goal is of each stakeholder in the value chain to \u201cwork under the same operational standards, such as Global GAP, IFS, BRC; in order to homogenise and guarantee a <\/span>modulus operandi<\/span><\/i> that allows customers to receive the product they paid for with all the assurances this implies\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bitter almonds<\/b><\/h3>\n

This was another of the critical issues discussed during the event. \u201cSpanish almonds have been associated with this peculiarity in the past because bitter almonds would be mixed with conventional ones. Now, we are in a position where we can guarantee the absence of bitter almonds through a late flowering stage. This needs to be a standard that must be passed on to every country. To do this, we must work and raise awareness at the source working with the farmers\u201d, Gaspar explained.<\/span><\/p>\n

The importance of jointly defining standard varieties in the sector<\/b><\/h3>\n

In addition, Gaspar also weighed in about the importance of jointly defining standard varieties in the sector: \u201cAs for global standards, with the arrival of major productions, we must understand the final product as a final variety or mixture that is perfectly defined, agreed upon and identified across the entire industry \u2013 from the farmer, all the way to the customer\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the other hand, Jos\u00e9 Manuel \u00c1vila, general director of <\/span>Fundaci\u00f3n Espa\u00f1ola de la Nutrici\u00f3n<\/i><\/b> (Spanish Nutrition Foundation)<\/span>, <\/b>weighed in about the nutritional advantages of almonds and hazelnuts: \u201cSweet almond has a high fat content \u2013 especially monounsaturated fats; it is a <\/span>source of vegetable proteins<\/b> and, to a lesser extent, it contains carbohydrates. As for the hazelnut, 78% of its fat is monounsaturated. They are like small capsules of olive oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Results of the <\/b>\u00abDetection and Eradication of Bitter Almond\u00bb<\/b> Taskforce<\/b><\/h2>\n

During this seminar, the <\/span>results of the \u00abDetection and Eradication of Bitter Almond\u00bb taskforce, <\/b>led by SAB-Almendrave, were also informed, whose members include Importaco and SMEs, multinationals, national producer organisations, cooperatives and R&D centres.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Xavier Miarnau, IRTA horticultural crop specialist and technical coordinator of the Taskforce, highlighted <\/span>that 25% of the surface monitored by the project, which can be extrapolated to 50% of the country\u2019s surface, was at risk of having bitter almonds.<\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For her part, Isabel Bombal, general director of Rural Development, Innovation and Forestry Policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food, stated that \u201cthis taskforce is an example of how a sector can innovate by integrating technological solutions throughout the entire chain\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Spain, the main producer of nuts in the EU<\/b><\/h2>\n

The closing event of this meeting saw the participation of Mar\u00eda Ang\u00e9lica Mateo, head of the Fruit and Vegetable Department of the General Sub-Directorate of Fruit and Vegetables and Viticulture of the Ministry of Agriculture, who highlighted that <\/span>Spain is the main producer and exporter of nuts in Europe and the second exporter worldwide, with exports valued at 700 million euros.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cThe sector has made authentic efforts, focusing on traditional models, but also on intensive models where irrigable land is increasingly gaining importance. At the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food we consider that it is a key sector.<\/span><\/p>\n
